Jon talked about what it means to discover God’s mission for your life, even in the midst of hostility and resistance. Perhaps those challenging forces are necessary to truly understand the actual work to which God is calling us.
MY STORY
Describe a time when you abruptly discovered that you were completely off-track in the direction you were heading.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO HEAR?
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.
(Acts 13:45)
What motivated these critics’ harsh reaction to Paul?
Why is it dicey for us to speculate about the motivations of people who oppose us? In what sense do their motivations not matter, especially if they are engaging with you disrespectfully?
Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the *Gentiles. (Acts 13:46)
*Gentiles are non-jewish people, kind of the “outsiders” in society
How did the severe resistance Paul and Barnabas face clarify their mission?
When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed ... the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit
(Acts 13:48, 52)
In what ways did the Gentiles and disciples react to Paul’s newly-clarified calling?
How did Paul and Barnabas use the contrasting reactions they received to their words to clearly see the direction God wanted them to go?
WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO DO?
How do you usually respond to hostility, either subtle or overt, from another person?
What are some unhealthy ways to do this that we should avoid?
Can God use contrasting reactions (positive or negative) to help us better know His leading? How?
WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO?
Look at the ways people have reacted to your work in the Kingdom of God.
Consider the possible biases of those who criticize you, and those who affirm you. How should their perspectives impact the ways you react to their feedback?
On a scale of 0 to 100%, how much clarity do you have on God’s unique calling on your life? Recruit someone who knows you well to sharpen that focus a few percentage points.
