Pastor Matt reminded us that genuine empathy enables us to unconditionally love those with whom we disagree.
MY STORY
Describe one of your friendships where the two of you agree on just about everything. What makes this relationship easy?
WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO HEAR?
Bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:2-3).
What was the “political” relationship between Naaman and this girl who had been made into a slave?
How did this servant girl show empathy and demonstrate mercy for her oppressor Naaman?
WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO DO?
When it comes to heated political discussions, what would “understanding without agreement” look like?
Why does the emotional intensity in any conflict tend to diminish when both sides fully understand each other’s position and priorities (again, without (necessarily) agreeing)?
WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO?
Before you enter into a heated discussion with someone, first try to figure out what beliefs, and even ultimate goals, you have in common.
Show empathy or mercy this week to someone who might never expect it from you.
